HISTORY OF THE CAPPON HOUSE: TIMELINE
1871

The weekend of October 8th, 1871, was a devastating one for towns and citizens all along the West Coast of Michigan. A series of fires broke out, possibly in connection with the Great Chicago Fire that took place the very same weekend. While only 1 death was reported in Holland, over two-thirds of the city burned down, including the Cappon's first house, and the first Cappon & Bertsch factory. Both were uninsured resulting in mass finanical loss for Isaac. The family temporarily relocated to a Coast Guard house near the lake.
